Old Alexandra HC
Role:
Biography:
Alexandra Hockey Club was founded in 1893 and is the oldest hockey club in the Ireland. The club was first set up as an Alexandra College team and later the Old College team. In 1947 it was renamed Old Alexandra Hockey Club. We currently have six teams ranging from the top division to the 12th division allowing for a huge range of abilities from complete beginners all the way up to the most skilled players. We also have a Vets team for all our slightly more mature members. There is room for everyone to get involved in some league action and we also have club members from all the four corners of the globe.
Training and home matches take place on our state of the art pitches in Milltown, one of Dublin's most central locations, and we are easily accessible by bus (44, 48A) or the Luas (green line, Milltown stop). We boast great coaches, a very friendly atmosphere, high hockey standards and a great social scene.
The Club has held a place in the Leinster Senior league, now Division 1, for its entire history. In that time it has collected a range of trophies but the club emerged as force to be reckoned with in the early eighties. In that decade alone Old Alex won 5 Senior Leagues, 4 Senior Cups, 2 All Ireland trophies, and numerous indoor titles.
We have many club players playing at senior, U18 and U16 international level and at inter-provincial level and even have the honour of one of our club members, Carol Metchette, representing Ireland at the London 2012 Olympics as a referee for the women’s hockey tournament.
Since the glory days of eighties, the 1st XI have maintained a position as one of the top teams in the country, even winning the Jacqui Potter Leinster Senior Cup in 2010. With senior success the rest of the club also emerged as teams worthy of respect with over 20 league and cup victories. The 2nd XI are in Division 2 and the 3rds, 4ths 5ths and 6ths hold equally high places in the leagues.
In addition to our senior teams our Old Alex Colts provides a fun environment for young players from 6 to 16 years to develop their team and hockey skills. Our coaches have lots of experience working with young children in developing their technical skills but also building a sense of competitiveness, team spirit and overall good sportsmanship. Despite all this Old Alex have never let hockey get in the way of a good party. We have been known on occasion to frequent the Dropping Well pub in Milltown and in the off-season we often go touring from California to Barbados and Rome to name a few.
We are always ready to welcome new players with open arms so if you are interested in playing for Old Alex please contact clubcaptainoahc@gmail.com
